RETINOL MYTHS THAT ARE DAMAGING YOUR SKIN BARRIER
What retinol really does, why irritation isn’t a sign it’s working, and how to use it safely.

Retinol is one of the most powerful and well-researched ingredients in skincare. It can improve fine lines, pigmentation, acne, texture, and overall skin quality — which is why it’s often considered a gold-standard ingredient.
But it’s also one of the most misunderstood.
ACCLIMATISE.
Many of the problems I see in clinic aren’t caused by retinol itself, but by incorrect use, unrealistic expectations, or misinformation. In some cases, patients unintentionally damage their skin barrier while trying to improve it.
At Moreton Aesthetics, a large part of my job is helping patients use retinoids effectively — without unnecessary irritation.
Let’s break down the most common myths.
Myth 1: Irritation Means It’s Working
This is probably the biggest misconception.
Redness, peeling, burning, and stinging are not goals of retinol therapy. They are signs that the skin barrier is struggling to adapt.
Retinol works by increasing cellular turnover and stimulating collagen production — processes that occur whether irritation is present or not.
Chronic irritation can actually:
Weaken the skin barrier
Increase inflammation
Trigger pigmentation
Worsen sensitivity
Delay results
Healthy skin responds better than inflamed skin.
Myth 2: Stronger Is Always Better
Many people assume higher percentages mean better results.
In reality:
Consistency beats strength
Tolerance matters more than concentration
Long-term use is what creates change
A lower-strength retinol used regularly will almost always outperform a strong product used inconsistently due to irritation.
Myth 3: You Should Use Retinol Every Night Immediately
Starting too fast is one of the most common causes of barrier damage.
Skin needs time to build tolerance.
A safer approach usually involves:
Starting 2–3 nights per week on a low pecentage
Gradually increasing frequency
Monitoring skin response
Supporting the barrier with moisturisers
Slow progression leads to better long-term outcomes.
Myth 4: Retinol Thins the Skin
This is completely incorrect.
Retinol actually thickens the dermis by stimulating collagen and elastin production over time.
What people sometimes experience early on is temporary dryness or peeling, which can give the illusion of thinning — but biologically, the opposite is happening.
Myth 5: You Can’t Use Retinol With Other Actives
Retinol can absolutely be combined with other ingredients — it just needs to be done intelligently.
For example:
Antioxidants in the morning complement retinol at night
Hydrating ingredients support barrier repair
Gentle exfoliation may enhance results when spaced correctly
Problems occur when too many active ingredients are layered without guidance.
Myth 6: If Your Skin Is Sensitive, Retinol Isn’t for You
Sensitive skin often benefits from retinoids — when introduced properly.
Options include:
Lower strengths
Encapsulated formulations
Gradual introduction
Barrier repair support
Alternative retinoid derivatives
Avoiding retinol entirely can mean missing out on significant long-term benefits.
How Retinol Actually Improves Skin
When used correctly, retinol can:
Stimulate collagen production
Reduce fine lines
Improve pigmentation
Smooth texture
Refine pores
Regulate oil production
Support acne control
Improve skin clarity
These changes develop gradually over months, not days.
Signs Your Skin Barrier May Be Struggling
If retinol is damaging your barrier, you may notice:
Persistent redness
Burning or stinging
Tightness
Flaking beyond mild dryness
Increased sensitivity
Breakouts or irritation
Shiny, fragile skin appearance
When this happens, the solution is usually adjustment — not abandonment.
How I Recommend Using Retinol Safely
A typical approach includes:
Starting slowly
Using moisturiser alongside application
Avoiding over-exfoliation
Supporting the barrier with hydration
Wearing daily SPF
Adjusting frequency based on tolerance
Skin should feel comfortable, not inflamed.
Retinol and Professional Treatments
Retinol also plays an important role around aesthetic treatments.
Used correctly, it can:
Improve treatment outcomes
Enhance collagen stimulation
Support pigmentation control
Maintain results
However, timing matters — retinol may need to be paused before and after certain procedures.
At my clinic, I often incorporate retinoids into long-term skin health plans alongside procedures like microneedling, laser, and peels.
The Takeaway
Retinol is not damaging — misuse is.
The biggest myths that harm skin barriers include:
Believing irritation is necessary
Starting too strong
Using it too frequently too soon
Combining too many actives
Ignoring barrier support
When used correctly, retinol is one of the most effective tools we have for maintaining healthy, youthful skin.
