SKINPEN® VS M.PEN® MICRONEEDLING: THE DIFFERENCES

Downtime, recovery and results examined.
Microneedling has become one of the most versatile treatments in aesthetic medicine. It can improve acne scarring, skin texture, pores, fine lines and overall skin quality, all by stimulating your skin’s own collagen production.
However, something many patients don’t realise is that microneedling is not one single treatment. Different devices can create slightly different treatment experiences, recovery times and outcomes.
Two systems commonly used in clinics are SkinPen® and m.Pen® microneedling devices. Both stimulate collagen in a similar way, but they can feel slightly different in terms of downtime, recovery and the type of results patients tend to see.
At Moreton Aesthetics, I offer both options, because different skin concerns and patient preferences can benefit from different approaches.
SKIN RENEWAL.
First: What Microneedling Is Actually Doing to Your Skin
Microneedling works by creating thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. These controlled micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing process, stimulating collagen and elastin production over the following weeks and months.
This process can gradually improve:
Acne scarring
Uneven texture
Enlarged pores
Fine lines
Mild pigmentation
Skin firmness and glow
Importantly, results develop gradually. Collagen remodelling continues for several months after treatment, so improvements often become more noticeable over time.
SkinPen® Microneedling
SkinPen® is one of the most widely recognised microneedling devices used in medical aesthetics and has been the subject of extensive clinical research.
It is also notable for its regulatory status. SkinPen® was the first microneedling device to receive FDA clearance, initially for improving the appearance of facial acne scars in adults, and later for neck wrinkles.
What downtime is usually like with SkinPen®
Most patients experience:
redness similar to sunburn for 24–48 hours
mild swelling or warmth on the day of treatment
occasional dryness or light flaking for a few days
Because the treatment is very controlled, many patients find they can return to normal activities the following day, with makeup typically possible after 24 hours.
For patients with busy schedules, this relatively predictable recovery is one of the reasons SkinPen® has become such a popular treatment.
Typical results with SkinPen®
SkinPen® treatments tend to produce gradual improvements in skin quality rather than dramatic changes overnight.
Patients often notice:
smoother texture
softer acne scars
reduced pore visibility
brighter skin tone
A course of three treatments spaced around four weeks apart is common, with collagen remodelling continuing for three to six months after treatment.
Because the treatment stimulates your body’s own repair processes, the results tend to look very natural and progressive.
m.Pen® Microneedling
m.Pen® devices are also widely used in aesthetic clinics and work on the same principle of collagen induction through controlled micro-needling.
Downtime and recovery with m.Pen®
Recovery with m.Pen® treatments is typically quicker than SkinPen®. The treatment is gentler and more superficial. Patients will generally experience less redness and skin returns to normal the next day.
How the Treatment Experience Can Differ
SkinPen® may appeal to patients who want:
a device with extensive clinical research
FDA-cleared indications for acne scars and neck wrinkles
very predictable recovery patterns
m.Pen® microneedling may be ideal for:
those waning a gentle glow
younger patients at the start of their collagen banking journey
Both approaches stimulate collagen, and the overall goal remains the same — improving skin quality gradually and naturally.
Which One Produces Better Results?
In reality, the device is only one part of the outcome.
The most important factors influencing results are:
practitioner skill
treatment depth
the number of sessions
your skin’s natural healing response
For many patients, the best results come from a course of treatments combined with medical-grade skincare and good sun protection. Microneedling tends to work best when it forms part of a long-term skin health strategy rather than a one-off treatment.
